Guide overview

Define the product, compare suppliers, check compliance, approve samples and calculate the full order structure before sourcing small appliances from China.

Successful small-appliance sourcing starts with a clear specification and a structured supplier comparison. Buyers should define the product, target market, quantity, packaging and compliance needs before comparing USD unit prices.

This guide covers the main decisions for importers, distributors and retailers sourcing kitchen, household and pet appliances from China.

China's small-appliance export scale

World Bank WITS data based on UN Comtrade reports the following 2024 exports from China under HS 851660:

Indicator2024 China exports
HS code851660
Export valueAbout $8.21 billion
Export quantityAbout 372.9 million units
United StatesAbout $1.59 billion
NetherlandsAbout $440.2 million
United KingdomAbout $368.1 million

Data scope: HS 851660 is a broad customs category covering ovens, cookers, cooking plates, boiling rings and similar products. It is a useful category reference and does not represent air fryers alone.

1. Define the product before requesting a quote

A request such as “Please quote an air fryer” leaves too many variables open. Give each supplier the same RFQ so the offers are comparable.

2. Choose the right product-development route

Private labelExisting product with buyer branding and packagingRetail and distribution programmes
OEMManufacturing to an agreed buyer specificationDefined custom requirements
ODMSupplier supports design, engineering and productionProduct-development projects

Supplier terminology varies. Record the actual deliverables, costs, ownership and approval stages in the quotation and agreement.

3. Compare suppliers beyond the unit price

Compare product price, tooling, packaging, testing, inspection, logistics, MOQ and lead-time impact together. Before shortlisting a company, use the Chinese supplier verification checklist.

4. Clarify how MOQ is calculated

Ask whether MOQ applies to the total order, each model, colour, voltage, plug, packaging design or branding configuration. This is especially important when one order serves several European markets.

5. Treat packaging as part of the product

Packaging affects protection, retail presentation, warehouse handling and freight. Request product dimensions, carton dimensions, net and gross weight, units per carton and pallet information where relevant. Confirm how accessories, glass parts, motors, sensors and cables are protected.

6. Check compliance before production

Identify the destination country before finalising the specification. For the European market, review applicable safety, electromagnetic compatibility, materials, marking, documentation and language requirements. The European Commission explains the official responsibilities of importers and distributors.

For regulated consumer products entering the United States, review current CPSC certification and electronic filing requirements on the CPSC eFiling resource.

7. Approve a sample before mass production

Test heating performance, controls, noise, construction, materials, cleaning, accessories, labels, manuals and packaging against the RFQ. For pet appliances, also review sensors, motor operation, cleaning cycles, safety mechanisms, power supply, app functions and replacement components.

8. Select the Incoterm and named place

The Incoterm allocates delivery tasks, costs and risks. Containerised shipments may use FCA, while FOB applies when delivery occurs on board a vessel. Read the detailed EXW vs FCA vs FOB guide and write the chosen rule with its named place and “Incoterms® 2020”.
